THYROID NODULES and FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION (FNA)
What are Thyroid Nodules?
Thyroid nodules are growths of thyroid cells into "lumps" within the thyroid. Most thyroid nodules do not cause any symptoms although rarely a nodule can cause discomfort, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness of voice, or hyperthyroid symptoms. Most nodules (> 90%) are benign (non-cancerous). Nevertheless, Thyroid Cancer is the most important cause of a thyroid nodule.
What is a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy?
This simple procedure is performed in the clinic during which a very thin needle to withdraw cells from the thyroid nodule under the guidance of the ultrasound. Thyroid ultrasound is used to localize the nodule and assist the placement of the needle within the nodule during a fine needle biopsy. The extracted cells are then examined under a microscope.
Our clinics perform around 250 thyroid biopsies a year. Success rates in achieving an adequate yield for diagnosis is 99%.
